Check out the interview with Suzanne Trollan, M.A., LCMHC
When did you begin at The Counseling Group?
January 2001
What made you decide to pursue a career as a counselor?
I have always loved hearing people’s stories. During my time in the Army, I gravitated toward the Human Resources field and enjoyed helping connect people with solutions for whatever they were facing. |
What theoretical approach(es) do you use in counseling?
Adlerian counseling emphasizes identifying a persons strengths as a way to live a more fulfilling life, so I start with that premise and tailor an approach to the individual. |
How would you describe your counseling style? What might a session with you look like?
I am somewhat unstructured, allowing the client to start with their current issue or give a full history depending on what their situation is. Each session, I offer an opportunity to address what is going on currently before delving into their longer term goals. |
How do you maintain your own mental health? What are your favorite forms of self-care?
I live a pretty healthy lifestyle, with good nutrition and physical activity. I enjoy being outdoors and being with people in my family and close friends. I am pretty open with them about what I am feeling and seek support when I am struggling on my own. |
What hobbies do you have?
Gardening, hiking, kayaking, fiber arts. |
What populations or age groups do you have experience working with?
Adults, teens, older adults, veterans and first responders |
What is your specialty or favorite thing(s) to work with in the counseling space?
Grief and life transitions |
What would be your advice to someone who is interested in beginning counseling but is unsure about the process?
I would say it is mostly about establishing a trusting relationship. How you feel with your therapist is very important, so don’t hesitate to make a change if you are not feeling it. |
What else do you want readers to know?
Having someone’s undivided attention is a really special thing. Therapy is a unique opportunity to make a conversation just about you! |
