Meet Anne Hendrix, M.A., LCMHC
Please enjoy the following interview with Anne.
When did you begin at The Counseling Group?
January 2011
What made you decide to pursue a career as counselor?
My initial career path was to be a Counselor for teens incarcerated in prison; and I wanted to try and make difference prior to a young person’s path to crime. |
What theoretical approaches do you integrate into your counseling practice?
Person Centered Therapy; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; Dialectical Behavioral Therapy; Exposure and Response Prevention and Positive Therapy approaches. |
How would you describe your counseling style? What might a session with you feel like?
I try to make an effort to be friendly, “down to earth” and non-judgmental. I have used German Shepherd dogs in my office since 2002 in an effort to help people feel more comfortable. I try to make an effort to be professional, but at the same time I try to present like a real person and on their level as much as possible. I am very validating and accepting from the start. |
How do you maintain your own mental health? What are your favorite forms of self-care?
I make positive selfcare a priority without being rigid and by being flexible. I enjoy the outdoors and love to walk my German Shepherd almost daily despite the weather while engaging in mindfulness and gratitude. I love hiking; kayaking; swimming when possible; chasing beautiful views; golf in season and travel. I love connecting with family and friends and nurturing these relationships. I eat well and hydrate well but participate socially with the menu. I want to talk and process life’s challenges as well as the positive experiences in my life. I enjoy being kind and grateful as this feels fun to me. I listen to music often! And lastly, I accept that I am human and give myself grace! |
What hobbies do you have?
My hobbies are included in the question above, as my hobbies are a significant part of my own self-care! |
What populations or age groups do you have experience working with?
Children 6 years old and above, teens, young and older adults |
What is your specialty or favorite thing to work with in the counseling space?
All types of anxiety; and I try to support everyone in their journey to become and to love their authentic self! |
What would be your advice to a client who is interested in beginning therapy but is unsure about the process?
Please know a significant part of our job and career is to honor you and do our best to help this process feel safe and much easier than you probably expect! |
What else would you like readers to know?
I feel the gratitude I experience from each client as they honor me with their life story and feelings! |
